Name: Maky A. Hafidh

Speciality Qualification: Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians of Canada (FRCSC) and Ireland (FRCSI). Otolaryngology.

Primary qualification: MBChB – July 1990

Medical School: University of Baghdad, College of Medicine, Iraq. This is a 6 year course, which includes basic medical sciences and clinical studies. The last (6th) year is an internship year.

Dr Hafidh has moved to Ireland 1996 and did his residency in Otolaryngology there; he acquired the Irish Citizenship and enjoyed living in Ireland for more than 11 years.

Current Position:

Consultant Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at Cape Breton District health authority since July 2008. He works in two hospitals : Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney ;and North Side General Hospital.

One year clinical fellowship in head and neck cancers and general otolaryngology diseases at the division of otolaryngology/Head and Neck surgery at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia July 2007-July 2008.

2-Otology and Neuro-otology Fellowship

Clinical Fellowship in Otology / Neurotology and Lateral Skull Base Surgery at Dalhousie University and QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, Nova Scotia. July 2006-June 2007.Under the supervision of Dr Manohar Bance and Dr David Morris.

Mission statement of fellowship: To produce well rounded inquiring academic otologist and neurotologists, who are clinically and research capable and will advance the boundaries of knowledge in the specialty of otology / neurotology.

Summary of fellowship: This fellowship consists of 60% clinical and 40% research components. The clinical component will encompass the whole of otology and neurotology, including middle ear disease and surgery, hearing reconstruction, skull base surgery, cochlear implants, implantable hearing devices, vestibular disorders and medical hearing disorders, in both adults and children. The research component will consist of research in middle ear mechanics, vestibular testing, gait testing, hearing handicap measures, as well as clinical research. The Fellowship equips the fellow to look at the full range of management options for skull base tumors. The current volumes of Cochlear Implants and BAHAs are approx 40-50/year.

Clinical Experience:

Four-year training programme run by the 'Higher Surgical Training Committee in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery' of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (Residency programme). The programme is supervised by the Royal College of surgeons of Ireland and England.

Protected research at the University of Liverpool/ UK, combined with clinical duties.
This research examined the role of apoptotic markers (p53,Bcl-2,Bax,caspase-3,survivin and Mdm2) and telomerase in the management of more than 200 cases of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas.
Supervisors were: Prof. A S Jones, University clinical department and Tim Helliwell, consultant in histopathology.
This is registered as part of an MD degree program with the University of Liverpool and will be completed soon.
